My New Pocket-size Watercolor Box

The small pocket-size watercolor box I ordered from Kremer Pigments arrived, it can hold 6 full pans or 12-14 half pans. I filled 12 empty half pans Snapped them into place to let them dry without any chance of accidentally knocking them over. The best part is that the Escoda pocket brush fits right in the space between the two rows of pans.

Neglected art supplies

How many of you have brought art supply only to use it a few times then stored away for years? I have the Golden Open Acrylics (among other stuff) that I brought a few years ago and haven't touch since after using them a few times. Today, I got them out along with some canvas paper (which also haven't been touched for years) and started playing around with them again and did this little 8 x 6 sketch. It will take a few sketches before getting accustomed to the way it handles.

Made a video of my painting process of "My old pair of Nikes", but this time used my digital camera instead of the Flip but had to put it through a few edits to shrink the file size down without completely making it unwatchable.The only problem is that the camera stopped recording 15 to 20 minutes before the end which I was unaware at the time. Hope you enjoy it regardless.

Been a couple of weeks since I played around with pastels and since I got the next couple of days off from work, figure I try to get a portrait I agreed to do done. But before doing that, I did this little 10 x 8 doodle on mat board coated w/ colourfix for a little bit of warming up. Didn't do the head and hands cause I would fuss over those two areas if I did.

Preliminary study

Been a couple of months since I agreed to do a couple of portraits for a friend of mine and have been putting it off. Anyhow, going to try to get it done in the next couple of days if I can muster up enough time and energy. Playing around with Cretacolor's Sanguine drawing lead, will have to start using the other colors eventually too, but I like the effects that this can produce and will have to experiment some more. The portrait however didn't come out too well with all the mis-alignments, good thing it was only a quick sketch :D

Finally got around to trying out the sample sheets of U-Art sanded paper that I got well over a year ago, the U-Art sanded paper is available in 4 different grades: 400, 500, 600, and 800. This is the first sample sheet which is the 800 grit surface, the tooth isn't quite aggressive enough for my style of painting but I think it would work beautifully with Pan Pastels.

Experimenting with different brands of paper to see what will or will not work with willow charcoal (besides paper that is made specifically for charcoal). Having read that 100% rag printmaking paper handles charcoal beautifully and having some Somerset on hand, started this small unfinished 10 x 8 sketch. Willow charcoal does indeed appear to work great on this paper, I'm going to have to try using charcoal on this paper again.

After receiving permission to use his photos images, I started with a sketch of a young girl in Kashmir in an attempt to capture what I saw in her: sorrow, pain, and strength

Inspired by the looseness of Carol Marine's One a Day oil paintings, did a study of one of her recent daily paintings, "Be Discreet", but with soft pastel. Even though the main focus was to paint loosely, I still did a little blending which killed the look of spontaneity. One of these days, I will learn not to blend :D
